The best book for new twin moms and twin moms-to-be

I have read a LOT of books on how to survive your first year with twins and this is by far my favorite. I really like the balance the author found between providing truly helpful advice and personal stories of being in the trenches. She has a great sense of humor and will make you bust out in laughter more than once, but her voice is also very warm and conversational. Like you're chatting with your wise mom-friend who's "been there, done that" and is ready to dish everything you need to know. I just survived my first year with twins and I wish this book existed sooner! Even if your babies are already here and you may be past the first few months, I still think it's a worthwhile read for the advice on sleep training and also on marital issues (something that most twin books I read didn't really cover in depth... the advice she gives is very helpful to me even after their 1st birthday...)

There is really nothing wrong with this book in itself. But I read eight books about having twins and none of them remotely prepared me for the amount of work twins are. I love my daughters to death but after having twins I think a single baby would be a cake walk. There is no book I could find that really prepares you for your experience and I doubt such a book exist.

Kids First Diabetes Second is a fantastic book filled with great tips, suggestions and advice for newly diagnosed families of children with T1D (Type 1 Diabetes). I wish this book was available when my son was diagnosed with type 1 back in 2008. The author shares her personal story about her daughter's diagnosis and as a fellow D-Mom, her words, feelings and responses mirrored my own throughout the book. What I loved about this book is that it is real. It is a book written by a Mother's journey/life experience from before diagnosis to present day. The book was also enjoyable to read as it featured stories from other D-Moms, D-Dads and friends of the author with Type 1 Diabetes. The one thing that is perfectly clear is that despite the anxiety, feeling of helplessness and being overwhelmed initially, managing this chronic condition does become easier. It truly does. As the mom of a five year old who is 6 months into a Type 1 diagnosis, I found this book to be fantastic. The book is the perfect marriage of good, solid information (both technical and practical) with the writing style and perspective of a mom. (Clinical and technical books have been great for my education of Type 1 diabetes health condition itself, but this book fills a huge gap). It was exactly what I was looking for, and it'll make a great reference and resource as we start school in the fall, begin sports, etc.

Concise, scientifically rigorous, and part of a coherent series
There are a million of these kinds of books, so it was hard to settle on just one. To narrow the field, I essentially eliminated any books that were just by some random person. Having a wacky personality or a bold new insight into childhood development may be good for spicing up an episode of Dr. Oz, but I prefer a book that has the backing of some kind of medical institution. I was pretty sure that meant a book from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sounds good, right?

My big problem with the AAP books was that there were just too many of them. A book on "taking your baby home." A book on his first month. A book on his first year. A book on his first five years. A book on his third Tuesday through his ninth winter solstice. All very fine books, judging by reviews, but the whole collected seemed a bit too incoherent to me. And did I really need an encyclopedia's worth of literature to get this kid through his first year?

Then there's this book. A measly...
Sensible, scientific and not at all preachy

Most baby books are filled with cutesy emotional stories and thinly veiled judgments, but this one just presents the facts and recognizes that everyone's baby, and everyone's circumstances are different. For a person with a logic-based brain, this is a great resource without all the annoying emotional filler.

Pretty good overall
This is a thorough, nicely-laid-out book that covers all kinds of different aspects of parenting an infant. It's positive about breastfeeding and cloth diapering--I'm amazed at how long it's taken baby book writers to figure out that most cloth diapers use snaps or Velcro fasteners, not pins, and have since the mid-1990's!--and it covers everything from airplane travel to adoption to multiple birth to caring for physical and mental disabilities, as well as normal developmental and medical issues and family relationships. It's really very thorough.

I am overjoyed that it talks about the feelings mothers have about enjoying the intellectual stimulation, adult interaction, and earning ability that comes with a career--something other books (*cough* Sears *cough*) don't even MENTION. So I don't have to beat myself up for liking my job. Oddly, though, I would have appreciated it if it had been a little more positive about the staying-at-home choice. This book talks about how if...
